WINDANSEA SURF CLUB TO HOLD 22ND ANNUAL “KID’S DAY”
La Jolla, California - February 22, 2008 – WindanSea Surf Club will host its 22nd annual “Kid’s Day at the Beach,” a non-profit event offering fun, sun and surfing instruction for underprivileged children, on August 23, 2008 at La Jolla Shores from 8:00AM to 4:00PM.
Over 60 children from St. Vincent de Paul Shelter for Homeless Families, located in downtown San Diego, will take part in the “Kid’s Day” event. The children will have the opportunity to learn how to surf and enjoy a beachside barbecue lunch and bags of goodies donated by local and national sponsors. The event teaches coordination and promotes confidence and enhanced self esteem.
The Day at the Beach Foundation was founded by Scot Cherry, a member of the WindanSea Surf Club in La Jolla. Cherry was organizer and Director of the event since its inception in 1986 through 2006 and currently serves as the event's CEO and spokesperson. He is assisted by Director Adam Bloomberg and a team of generous supporters from the WindanSea Surf Club, who volunteer and fundraise for the “Kid’s Day” event. Volunteers from across Southern California, including members from other surfing organizations, also attend and assist in teaching the children.
“For many of these children, Kid’s Day at the Beach is the first time they have ever been to the ocean, even if they have grown up in San Diego,” says Cherry. “The joy this event puts in their hearts is evident; it shows on their faces and makes everything we do to put on this event worth it one hundred times over. We have made significant strides with this event over the past 22 years and anticipate an exceptional turnout of both children and volunteers this year.”
In past years, Kid’s Day has attracted such surfing legends as Mike Doyle, John Peck, surf photographer Tom Keck, and other local legends like Peter King, Saxon Boucher, and more. Tifani VanArtsdalen-Swink, daughter of surf legend Butch VanArtsdalen, has served as co-chair and the volunteer coordinator for Kid's Day.
Volunteers include San Diego Lifeguard Lieutenant John Greenhaug, who donates his time to help oversee the safety of the event and teach the children to surf. At least two physicians donate their time to be on-hand – WindanSea Surf Club member and President, Dr. Karl Luber, and Dr. Austin Hewlett, who travels from Huntington Beach each year to help out.
Silvergate Bank has been instrumental over many years by organizing fundraising and funds management. The company has created a portal through their home page where supporters can donate money to Kid’s Day electronically. The La Jolla YMCA also donates a bus and arranges for a driver each year. Other donors and sponsors include REEF Sandals, Quiksilver, MG Ink silk-screeners, Headhunter Sunscreen and several magazines, including Surfer, Surfing and SurfShot.
